Default Should X-2 Be considered a "true FF"

While most hardcore fans don't count games like crisis core to be true main final fantasies for the main reason that they deviate too much from the standard template of the main Final Fantasy games. Now I have to admit I critizised X-2 quite extensively when it came out, considering it a simpler version, poorly put together and with far too much emphasis on fan service. However recent playthroughs have forced me to reconsider my stance.

First of all the battle system is far more in line with most Final Fantasy games, moreso than X. Secondly it features an easy main story line and various challenging side quests, again in line with most Final Fantasy games, although Vegnagun is far easier than any other last boss. Finally it had a job system, hearkening back to the original final fantasies.

All these three points to the final fantasy purist should make you consider X-2 to be the truest Final Fantasy since FFV. So what do you think? Is X-2 more of a "Final Fantasy" game than all of the other modern games? Or should it simply be regarded along with games like Crisis core and Dirge of Cerberus?

Don't mess with my favorite final fantasy ;)

IMO I think it's a treu final fantasy. It has all the important elements such as espers (aeons) magic and a treu sad final fantasy storyline. A Yuna rocks ;) that's the most important thing ;)

It is true that it feels quite close to older FF's, especially the battle system/jobs (lack of summoner, though) and it is a sequel (not a spin-off) so I do consider it to be part of the main series.

depends on your defination of a true final fantasy really. I call Crises Core a true final fantasy because it is an rpg, even if slightly more action orientated like ffxiii is going to be. only 2 i really dont consider part of the main series is dirge of cerberus and final fantasy xi

I'd go with what Matt said. Except if you call Crisis Core a true FF, then really you should call Dirge Of Cerberus one too. The only one I exclude is XI. Me I thought X-2 was ok, but i'm not a huge fan of mini games really.

Well, if it's set in a Final Fantasy universe, doesn't that make it a "true" Final Fantasy game by default? FF X-2 isn't as bad as people like to say it is, in fact, I found it enjoyable, if only for one play. I find the only people who bash it, at least in my experience, secretly enjoyed it and are ashamed to admit it for some childish reason. Only thing not to like would be Paine, but maybe that's just me.

I did find it fun in the period I played it but it isn't even close to a favorite of mine. I don't think i'd even pick it back up and play it again because it just wasn't that fun. Maybe I just dislike mini games, the story was ok even though you had to play through several times to get the real one which back then I did. Just not a huge fan I guess, yeah Paine was pretty lame.

You're right about the mini games, though I think I enjoyed maybe one or two. I must admit that the battle system was probably the best part of the game. I personally enjoyed turning everyone into a Dark Knight and obliterating everything.

Haha I can say the strategy I had picked out was a little cheaper.

I had alchemist (Y), beast (R) and dark knight (P) combo. Pure power and basically immortal! XD
